Adam Copeland is having a lot of fun in his AEW run, and he recently weighed in on his motivation for this stage of his career. Copeland has been with AEW since 2023 and is now the co-holder of the AEW World Tag Team Championships, having won them with Christian Cage at AEW Double or Nothing.

Copeland weighed in on his current motivations and goals in his interview with Westwood One Sports Night. He noted that a big part is being able to write his own ending after he was forced to retire due to his neck injury. He said that at this point he wants to pass on knowledge and just have fun. You can see the highlights below:

On His Motivation For This Run:

“I think more than anything, it was being told I had to retire the first time, and really not getting to see it through the way that I wanted to see it through. I felt like I’d accomplished everything I set out to do, I really had in that regard. And at that stage of my career when I was forced to retire, it was about having fun now. Because I put in all those miles, so I got myself to a point where it’s like, ‘Okay, now we’re in a good position. World champ, this is great. We’re doing good business, all those things — but it’s done. ‘Oh man, all right, huh.’

“So once I was able to get this back it was like, ‘Okay, now I want to go and I want to work an entire new era. My third era of talent essentially. I can go from wrestling Jerry Lawler and Terry Funk to like, I’m wrestling Griff Garrison, you know? Or like — I’m trying to think of polar opposites… and that lights me up.”

On Being Able to Go Out On His Own Terms:

“I think just in getting to come back and go, ‘Okay, this time I’m going to get to end it the way I want to end it, and not kind of be blindsided by having to quit this thing that I’ve always wanted to do.’ I think that really was the main impetus to get back.

“And also the challenge to come back, you know? There’s nobody with a triple fusion that’s ever come back to wrestling. And that challenge to me, was huge. I was like, ‘Okay, man.’ I get off on challenges. I always have.”

On His Goals:

“I think more than anything, it’s just this time, coming back to try and work with some new talent, maybe pass on some knowledge to help further the industry. And just to have some cool fun stories. And everything’s gravy at this point. It really is, man.”
