Backstage Notes on SEGA Sponsorship for Like a Dragon Gaiden Street Fight on AEW Dynamite
– Fightful Select has an update on last night’s Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Street Fight featured on AEW Dynamite and how the sponsorship for the SEGA game came together. The sponorship for the Yakuza gamin series spinoff was reportedly valued into the six-figure range.
According to the report, AEW wrestler and EVP Kenny Omega and Nik Sobic had worked on the deal for several weeks with SEGA. There were pitches for the matchup to take place at AEW Full Gear and other events, but AEW ultimately decided to use it for last night’s edition of Dynamite in Ontario, California over Full Gear to put more eyes on the sponsorship deal.
Paul Wight was already factored in for the matchup as he was targeting an in-ring return this month. As noted, Sammy Guevara was originally booked for the matchup, but he was pulled due to not being medically cleared and replaced by Brian Cage.
Also, Tony Khan including the mention of SEGA and Kota Ibushi winning the Street Fight in the signing announcement yesterday as some added value for the sponsorship deal. Fightful added that the sources they spoke with were happy with how the match came off.
