Backstage Update on Speculation Around The Rock Being Randy Orton’s Mystery Caller

Ever since Randy Orton brutally attacked Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes during their contract-signing segment on SmackDown and turned heel, he has been talking to a mystery man on the phone. This has led fans to speculate about the caller’s identity.
One of the names floating around is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The Final Boss hasn’t appeared on WWE programming since last year’s Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event. At that show, The Rock sought Cody’s response to his offer of being his corporate champion. However, Cody refused to “sell his soul,” leading to John Cena shockingly turning on him and joining hands with The Rock.
However, The Rock disappeared from WWE TV following that angle. Despite that, his involvement in the ongoing story between Randy Orton and The American Nightmare makes sense, given his bloodied history with Cody. In the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed the speculations around The Final Boss being the mystery caller. Alvarez suggested that it has to be The Rock. However, Meltzer said that the possibility of Johnson being involved in the story has been “strongly denied” to him by WWE sources.
That said, he admitted that even if The Rock were involved in the angle, not many people would be aware of it.
“Everyone tells me it’s not,” Meltzer said. “But of course, if it is, The Rock’s not going to let anyone know. But within the company, it was pretty much strongly denied to me. But like I said, when it comes to Dwayne, there’s only going to be three people who know. It’s going to be Nick and Paul and Dwayne. And you know, maybe one or two others, but it ain’t going to be, like, a lot of people. So yeah, if he fits, he absolutely fits in the story. But you know, I was absolutely told that it ain’t him, so.” [H/T: Wrestling INC.]
Randy Orton will challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Title at WrestleMania 42. The premium live event will emanate from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19, 2026.
