Chelsea Green knows why there are wrestling veterans who are critical of WWE: Unreal, but she thinks the show is to WWE’s benefit. The Netflix docuseries returns next week for its second season, and Green is again a featured talent in the show. The series has drawn criticism from a number of more old school individuals such as Bully Ray and Seth Rollins, who worry that the show exposes the business.
Green understand that standpoint, but she believes the show is helping WWE move forward. She spoke with Denise Salcedo, about the series and talked about how it can open up WWE to new fans as well as the sports and entertainment industries. You can check out some highlights below:
On Her Response To People Critical Of Unreal:
“I just feel like look, wrestling is basically the longest soap opera known to mankind. Why would you not want to peel back the curtain and watch how the longest-running episodic television show is made? I don’t understand. I mean, Total Divas was one of the best shows on E!. So the proof is in the pudding. We do like when the curtains are pulled back. We do like an inside look.
“I think it’s just this funny balance of people wanting to protect the business, but we’ve got to progress forward. And unscripted reality TV is progressing forward. Pulling the curtain back is progressing forward. Showing the — especially entertainment industry that we belong.
On How Unreal Benefits WWE:
“Because I think that we’ve been the black sheep in that sports doesn’t want to claim us. You see that we’re not necessarily like [at] the forefront of the ESPYs or things like that, right? We’re not really in Sports Illustrated all the time. And then Hollywood is like, ‘Yeah, but you’re not a TV show. Yeah, but you’re not real actors. We’re not going to have you as part of the SAG union and things like that.’ Like, it’s so interesting.
“So, I personally think that moments like Unreal are what are going to help push this industry forward and branch out into sports and into Hollywood in ways that we didn’t know it could. And then also, we’re going to get new fans. It’s on Netflix. Hello, new fans are going to watch this and they’re going to tune in to Raw, Smackdown, PLEs, NXT. And there’s nothing bad about that.”
