Bandido challenged Templario for the CMLL World Middleweight Championship this past weekend, a match that was reportedly interrupted by a fan hitting the ring. As reported, the match took place during CMLL’s International Weekend show on Sunday, with Templario successfully retaining his championship. The WON reports that the match got disrupted when the fan walked right into the ring about seven minutes into the match and wouldn’t leave. The entire matter lasted about two and a half minutes.
According to the report, the fan remained in the ring for “a few minutes” until security could get him out. CMLL ended up taking down their entire feed of the show.
While in previous years wrestlers would take matters into their own hands and assault the fan, that isn’t the case particularly in CMLL. The report notes that talent and referees are told in such situations not to touch invading fans as they don’t want footage to come out that can be selectively presented or edited in a way to show talent attacking a fan, warranted or not. In this case, the fan did not attack the talent and Bandido walked up to ask him to leave, as did referee Edgar Noriega. The fan refused to do so.
The report adds that security was slow to get to the ring and the fan was able to hop the barrier, walk into the ring, and climb the ropes without being stopped. Cameras pulled away from the matter but the crowd could be heard loudly reacting with cheers and boos. The moment reportedly drew the biggest reactions of the show.
Bandido left the ring and stayed on the apron until the fan was out of the ring and tried to pick back the match back up. However, the moment disrupted the match’s momentum and the crowd never fully got back into it.
