Cody Rhodes is set for a rematch with Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship after beating Jey Uso on this week’s episode of WWE Smackdown. Rhodes and Uso competed in the main event for the #1 contendership for Zayn’s title, which he won at WWE Night of Champions.
The match was set up via a promo by Zayn to kick off the show, in which he heeled on the fans for cheering his title win when they had been booing him for the past six months. He said the fans had jumped on the bandwagon and he could tell them to kiss his ass, but he’s a good guy.
That led to Rhodes and then Uso coming out to the ring separately. Both men congratulated Zayn on his title win but made their intentions clear that they planned to win the title. Uso said he planned to bring it to his family, but Zayn said that as far as he was concerned the title is with the family, referencing his time in the Bloodline.
The situation led to Adam Pearce coming out to announce a match between Rhodes and Uso to determine Zayn’s next challenger, with the title shot set for Monday’s Raw.
The match served as the main event and saw Rhodes and Uso fight tooth and nail, with Rhodes ultimately scoring the win when he managed to escape a sleeper attempt and hit Cross Rhodes for the pinfall.
You can see clips from the match below. Rhodes vs. Zayn for the title takes place on Monday’s Raw, which takes place at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois and airs live on Netflix.
