Csonka’s ROH War of The Worlds (Night III) Preview

WELCOME back to column time with Larry! Today, I am going to discuss and preview tonight’s ROH War of The Worlds (Night III) event. This is one of the many ROH events that will be streaming live on the Honor Club service this year, and this time; some of the stars of NJPW are along for the ride. EVIL vs. Shane Taylor: This should be a fun, hard-hitting hoss fight. EVIL is really good and Taylor has shown he can step up and deliver, despite ROH not really knowing what to do with him most of the time. This is a simple one; let the two guys beat the hell out of each other and hoss around, and give them a finish to build to. With EVIL being one half of the IWGP tag team champions and Taylor being basically “a guy” on the roster, EVIL should pick up the win. WINNER: EVIL

Socal Uncensored vs. Jushin Liger, Cheeseburger, & Flip Gordon: Socal Uncensored are a unified force, and are coming off of losing the trios titles. Their opponents are a group of fun, but thrown together, babyfaces. Liger seems to be mentoring Flip on the tour ahead of Flip working the BOTSJ. Liger absolutely loves Cheeseburger, and always works with him on the joint RPOH/NJPW shows. He’s also the reason that Burger has worked the Rambo match at the dome a few times. Flip will do his flips, Liger will play the hits, and Burger will do his thing, which the crowds tend to love. It will likely feature a lot of comedy and fun, with the heels overcoming to ruin the party. WINNER: Socal Uncensored

Marty Scurll vs. Kenny King vs. Matt Taven vs. Jay Lethal: Taven was robbed of his ROH title shot, but ended up with the six-man titles along with the rest of the Kingdom on night one. King is looking for momentum after losing the TV Title, while Lethal is coming off of his latest failure going after the ROH world title. On the other hand, Scurll comes into the match with a guaranteed ROH title shot, which I think will take place on the UK tour; and if that is happening, it makes the most sense for Scurll to pick up the win here. WINNER: Marty Scurll

Adam Page vs. Punishment Martinez: These two were to face off at the second Bound by Honor show, but due to Page being injured, they ran an angle where Martinez took him out and moved the match to this show. Martinez also attacked him on night two. Martinez to Jay White ahead of this show, which makes me feel as if he’ll pick up the win here. ROH sees a lot in him, but ROH & NJPW also are really high on Page, who seems to be positioned as a babyface these days. It’s a real toss up and feels like it could be the start of a longer program for the two. If that’s the plan, I can see Martinez picking up the win here. This could be a good one. WINNER: Punishment Martinez

Cody vs. Hiromu Takahashi: Takahashi is an absolutely great performer, and is always game to put on a banger of a match. Cody has been a really good heel in 2018, but has had really mixed in ring results. There are times he has looked absolutely locked in a great, and then times when he plays his smoke and mirrors game resulting lackluster performances. If Cody’s here to have a great wrestling match, he has the right dance partner to achieve that with. I hope we get that Cody here, because if we do, we’re in for a really good match. Cody, being the heavyweight and ROH regular, should pick up the win. WINNER: Cody

Roppongi 3k vs. The Young Bucks vs. The Motor City Machineguns: Roppongi 3k are looking to challenge once again for the IWGP Junior tag titles, while the Bucks are about to challenge for the IWGP tag titles. The Machineguns are on a losing streak, and teasing a breakup, which doesn’t bode well for them here. If everyone is on and it’s not overbooked, this match right here has the chance to be the match of the night and one of the best of the whole tour; I have high expectations for this one. With Roppongi 3k having a tag title shot the next day, them picking up the win here (over the troubled Machineguns) makes the most sense. WINNER: Roppongi 3k

ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes vs. Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI: There is no real story or set up here, it’s just ROH champions vs. NJPW stars. They can, in a way, play off of the past issues with LIJ & CHAOS here, as The Briscoes have been associated with CHAOS in the past. The hook here will be the star power in the match, and how the crowd reacts to the talent, as the chances of a tag title change feel slim, especially with the Briscoes having a tag title match at the TV tapings on the next night. I think the major thing to wonder about here is which Naito shows up. I have discussed it in the past, Naito is a great performer and is a certified star, but he doesn’t always deliver max effort on these shows. Naito & BUSHI work very well together as a team, and if Naito is motivated, this certainly has a chance to not only be fun, but also very good. I’m hoping for the best, but I’d be completely shocked if the Briscoes lost here. WINNER: Champions The Briscoes
