John Cena Recalls His Instructions to AJ Styles To Avoid Performing the 619 at WWE Crown Jewel

During the new season of WWE: Unreal, John Cena recalled his epic matchup with AJ Styles that took place at WWE Crown Jewel Perth last October. During the Netflix docuseries, John Cena recalled fans calling for them to perform many of their past opponents’ signature moves.

At one point, John Cena performed the spot where he set up Styles to take the 619, one of the signature moves of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio. However, the spot was a fake-out, as performing the move would’ve been impossible for Cena.

As a result, Cena told Styles to hit him with a clothesline to counter the move in order to avoid performing it. Cena explained, “I can’t do the 619, but I told AJ, ‘I’ll drop toe hold you.’ You can see me drop toe hold him, and lean against the ropes, and I say. ‘Clothesline me, clothesline me so I don’t have to do this move.'”

Before their match, Cena handed a personal handwritten introduction to announcer Alicia Taylor and requested her to read it out loud. It praised Styles’ career across NJPW, TNA and WWE. It was an unscripted moment which he had later revealed got him into slight trouble with WWE management.

Cena retired on December 13 with his final match against Gunther at SNME. A month later, Styles competed in his last match too against The Ring General at the Royal Rumble.
