Kane is reportedly considered to be the favorite to fill the US Senate seat being vacated by Marsha Blackburn. The Washington Sun reports that Glenn “Kane” Jacobs is being considered as the frontrunner to be appointed to the Tennessee US Senate seat.
Blackburn won the election for Tennessee governor in the midterms, which means that she will vacate the Senate seat that she has held since 2019. It falls upon Blackburn to appoint someone to fill her seat until it is next up for election, which would be 2028.
Jacobs is coming off an eight-year run as mayor of Knox Country, Tennessee. He was unable to run again due to term limits. It was reported in September that, should Blackburn win the Governorship as she was expected to, Jacobs was considered a potential appointee. Blackburn survived an otherwise difficult night nationwide for Republicans, winning the seat over Democrat Jerri Green by a closer-than-expected 2.5% margin.
Jacobs is not the only potential candidate for the appointment. The Sun reported that US Representative Tim Burchett, Deputy Gov. Stuart McWhorter, and US Representative Chuck Fleischmann are also part of the list of potential candidates. Two Republican operatives familiar with Tennessee politics and one who has spoken with Jacobs said he has an advantage considering his closeness to Blackburn. He is a client of Ward Baker, a top consultant for Blackburn, and has been a close ally of hers.
One operative cites Jacobs’ ability to connect with both establishment Republicans and working-class voters as a sign in his favor. Jacobs spoke with Fox News’ Rundown podcast in early October and said he would be open to the appointment, saying:
““Yeah, obviously it’s a huge honor for me, so I would consider it very seriously.”
There were some reports that President Trump was hoping to have Pete Hegseth installed in the Senate seat, allowing him to vacate the US Defense Secretary role amid rumors of a potential impeachment vote for Hegseth over the Iran war. However, Hegseth is not reportedly in consideration for the spot.
