A new report has some additional details on CM Punk’s termination from AEW, including conflicting reports of the planned meeting with the Elite and more. As reported, AEW announced on Saturday that Punk’s employee and performer contracts had been terminated following an investigation into the altercation between Punk and Jack Perry at AEW All In. Fightful Select reports that there were interviews taking place in regard to the investigation all week that included those who witness the altercation as well as those who interacted with Punk throughout his time with the company. Several “unrelated things” where said to have been looked into.
There is no indication that anyone beyond the disciplinary committee mentioned in the statement knew that the decision to fire Punk was coming within the company. Warner Bros. Discovery was informed that it was comin and the Young Bucks were scheduled for Collision as of Thursday, while Bryan Danielson was planned to face Ricky Starks at All Out as of Wednesday. There’s been no word of Punk speaking with anyone thus far, and there’s no indication as of yet that Ace Steel’s work as a remote consultant will be affected.
It was also reported yesterday that there was a planned meeting between Punk and The Elite before All In that was cancelled at the last minute. Fightful Select reports that the truth of this is a matter of who you talk to; sources close to Punk say the meeting was set to happen, while those close to The Elite have adamantly denied that it was ever going to happen. All sides to seem to agree that a meeting was at least pitched. Punk’s side indicated that Punk was frustrated that The Elite were not willing to speak to him.
It was also said that specifics regarding Punk and Tony Khan’s interactions have been kept quite other than that there were unpleasant interactions throughout the day.
One source said that Warner Bros. Discovery and AEW spoke this past week about AEW Collision direction and ending the soft brand split that had been in place. Danielson is expected to be an integral part of Collision going forward.
