Jeff Cobb is set to be a free agent soon following his exit from WWE late last month, and a new report has an update on his potential future. As noted, Cobb — the former JC Mateo — was let go from the company at the start of the month. Cobb was part of the MFTs on WWE Smackdown.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cobb was backstage at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku which took place on May 3rd and 4th.
The report from Dave Meltzer notes that Cobb is still believed to have a residence in Japan. However, it is not known if he will be joining New Japan, and Meltzer noted that it wouldn’t surprise him if he ends up with AEW but that his chances of going there as a star are lower than when he joined WWE last year.
Cobb debuted for WWE at Backlash 2025, helping Jacob Fatu retain the WWE United States Championship against LA Knight, Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest. Cobb was previously a top foreign star in NJPW and did wrestle some matches for AEW during his time with NJPW.
Finally, the report notes that Cobb is set to be a free agent from WWE on July 24th.
