Lucha Underground drew some attention with a teaser they posted recently, and a new report has an update on industry speculation about the matter. The defunct wrestling promotion-slash-series posted a video to Twitter in late may and hinted on their official website toward a “rebirth” of some kind.
Fightful Select has posted a new report after asking around about the teasers. It’s important to point out right off the top that there is no confirmed word on what the teaser is about and the key word in the headline is “speculation.”
The site notes that Amazon MGM has a controlling interest in Lucha Underground, and sources in the industry who have asked say that Amazon MGM seems happy with the library “floating around.” There have been some inquiries in the past about potentially buying the library, but there has not been any major interest from the media conglomerate in selling it.
One source in AEW indicated that they believe there could be some involvement from WWE in Lucha Underground, but that is not confirmed. People in the industry told the site that they believe the recent puzz is being done to get people talking ahead of a YouTube channel launch for Lucha Underground content.
Lucha Underground was launched back in 2014 and ran for four seasons as a TV series on El Rey. Developed by Mark Burnett and Robert Rodriguez, the series featured stars like Rey Mysterio, Penta, Rey Fenix, Angelico, Chelsea Green, Thunder Rosa, Dr. Wagner Jr., Melina, Swerve Strickland, and many others. The final episode aired in November of 2018.
