During a recent interview with Down Under the Ring’s Phid McAwesome for Fightful, AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) addressed why he opted to defend his title against Alec Price at Limitless Wrestling’s Limitless Rumble 2026 on January 16. MJF revealed that Tony Khan was interested in both Jordan Oliver and Alec Price and wanted to find out if they were truly “elite.”
After the match, Oliver and Price were offered contracts with AEW through MJF. Below are some highlights:
MJF on Why He Defended His Title Against Alec Price
“Well, first of all, it wasn’t a high school gym. It was actually — II sold it out. It was 2,200 people in the same arena where Cassius Clay [Muhammad Ali] won his first world title. True story. Yes. Portland, Maine. But outside of that, why did I do it? I did it because my boss was interested in two young talents that I’ve actually known for a very long time, Alec Price and Jordan Oliver. I’ve always thought highly of them, but I’ve always never truly known if they had what it took to be elite. To be elite means being the best professional wrestler in the world. To be elite means being a part of a select group of individuals that get television time on Wednesday nights and Saturday nights. To be elite means to be the cream of the crop. So I needed to find out for my boss, and I wrestled this kid. I successfully defended my AEW World Championship against him at Limitless Wrestling. And I got to say the kid’s got balls. He’s got Moxley. Moxy. He’s got charisma for days. Thank god he doesn’t have Moxley. He’s got charisma for days.”
On His Expectations for Price and Oliver
“But I really think they’re going to be special. I think in two to three years time, if those guys really train hard, get themselves in the gym, put some more mass on, these guys are going to be legitimate contenders in the tag team division of our promotion.”
Price and Oliver, known as the tag team of Bustah & The Brain, are the current GCW and Xcite Tag Team Champions.
