UPDATEDx2: More Details On Kofi Kingston Being Frontrunner to Face Daniel Bryan at Fastlane, His Future Plans

UPDATEx2: Ringside News reports that an angle is being planned for tonight’s WWE Smackdown that will set up the Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston match for WWE Fastlane.

Additionally, the Wrestle Votes Twitter account, which has a reliable track record, says that the WrestleMania plan for Daniel Bryan is “fluid” and that WWE could run Bryan vs. Kofi again at ‘Mania.

And just like that… “plans changed” per Meltzer.

UPDATE: As the saying goes, “plans change.” In this case, it appears that within the last day or so, WWE has shifted its WWE title plans for Fastlane 2019. The Wrestling Observer and Dave Meltzer are now reporting that there’s been a change of plans for the WWE title match at the event. As of now, it appears that Kofi Kingston is indeed the frontrunner to face Daniel Bryan for the WWE title at Fastlane.

Earlier, the plans did not appear to include Kingston getting the shot at Fastlane. Additionally, Kingston was stated as not being in the plans for “either Fastlane or WrestleMania.” That appears to have partly changed as of Monday, February 18.

WWE opted to make the change for Fastlane after the reception for Kofi Kingston’s performance in the gauntlet match last week on Smackdown and the Elimination Chamber match at last Sunday’s event.

Per the report, it’s not yet clear if this will cause changes to what plans WWE has previously set up for the WWE title and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35. The report notes that Bryan is still scheduled to face a returning opponent rather than a regular member of the Smackdown roster, as noted below.

ORIGINAL: In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (via Ringside News), Dave Meltzer said that in spite of his performance on a recent episode of Smackdown and at Elimination Chamber, WWE is not considering Kofi Kingston for a WWE title shot against Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania. Instead, they are looking at a possible returning superstar like Batista, John Cena, Bray Wyatt, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Kurt Angle or Undertaker for the event.

He said: “Kofi Kingston was not the plan as of this morning for either Fastlane or WrestleMania, and obviously things can change. So the WrestleMania story that I’ve heard was that it would be someone who is being brought back as opposed to somebody he’s been facing. The people on the list for discussion that could be brought back Bray Wyatt, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Kurt Angle, Undertaker, John Cena, Batista — Kurt Angle has been in discussion for WrestleMania, I don’t think it’s going to be Kurt Angle though. There could be others but those are the names that I’m aware of that are available for discussion.”

Zayn is said to be ready to return to the ring. Batista, meanwhile, had no deal with WWE as of a week ago. As for Cena, WWE reportedly has other plans for him at the event so he’s not likely. The Undertaker is said to be a surprising name (according to Wrestling Inc) because he’s recently taken appearances and bookings outside of WWE, including Starrcast II. However, talks for a Wrestlemania match started again this past weekend.

Daniel Bryan’s challenger for Fastlane will be revealed tonight.
