PWInsider reports that during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, The Rock confirmed that there were plans for him to face Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 39 in Los Angeles. This had been reported multiple times by Dave Meltzer and others, prior to Cody Rhodes winning the Royal Rumble. From there, WWE moved forward with Rhodes vs. Reigns.
Rock said that he met with Nick Khan and Vince McMahon a week before and agreed to the match with the idea that it “wasn’t going to be the end of something, but the beginning.” He said they got close but couldn’t figure things out so they backed off. He noted that he was open to appearing at Wrestlemania 40 in Philadelphia. Rock said the fans deserve “something special”, but he wanted to help the locker room that have been working hard to be a part of something that could be a big change or new era for wrestling.
Finally, he said he didn’t think Vince McMahon would ever sell the company but he’s not surprised.
