Gabe Kidd captured the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship last week, though it was reportedly originally planned to go down a while back. Kidd defeated Shota Unimo to capture the championship in the main event of the NJPW Road To G1 Climax show on July 6th in Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
According to Fightful Select, the original plan called for Kidd to win the title months ago. However, Kidd was injured at AEW Dynasty and was forced to be out of action.
Gabe Kidd is a former NJPW Strong Openweight Champion and NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Champion, having held both titles when he was under contract to NJPW. He is now signed to AEW and had a one-day reign with the AEW World Trios Championships with his Dogs allies David Finlay and Clark Connors. The three held the titles for only one day before losing them at Dynasty.
