The Purge Creator Says Forever Purge May Not Be Last Entry
The Purge franchise unveiled its latest entry this weekend in The Forever Purge, and its creator says there may still be another one to come. James DeMonaco spoke with EW for a new interview and said that he may have a new idea for another entry.
“I thought it was [the last film],” DeMonaco said about The Forever Purge. “Even with Everardo, it was like this is it, my end of America, America is burning. So that was the initial intent. I’m going to be completely honest, I came up with something about two months ago. I woke up with a new way that we can keep it fresh and turn the thing upside down. So if the people want it, the idea’s in the works, I’ve outlined it, so it could happen. [Laughs]”
The Forever Purge centers on a Mexican couple, Adele (Ana de la Reguera) and Juan (Tenoch Huerta), who attempt to escape Texas after the annual Purge, now outlawed, is taken up by Purgers who want to extend the lawless period indefinitely. Adele and Juan are forced to band together with the wealthy Tucker Family after they’re targeted by a masked gang of killers.
DeMonaco was asked about Blumhouse head Jason Blum’s assertion that he won’t make another film in the franchise without him and said, “Yeah, he says that to me. He really wants me to direct the next one. It’s such a crazy idea I was actually like, oh, maybe I’ll do that one. I’ll definitely write it, I’ll say that. So I’ll definitely be involved in some way. I do worry, in different hands, you just don’t want to see it go the wrong way, because it easily could, with a concept like this.”
The film is expected to bring in $10 million for the weekend.
