Super Mario Bros. Breaks Record For Most Expensive Video Game Ever Sold (Again)
Super Mario Bros. is a historic game for many reasons, and it has re-nabbed one of those reasons by becoming the subject of the highest price for a video game ever. The New York Times reports that the a vintage copy of the NES game has sold for $2 million, making it the most expensive video game ever sold.
The announcement was made by Rally, a collectibles company who say that an anonymous buyer bought the unopened game. That price tag breaks the previous record of $1.56 million that was paid at auction for a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.
Super Mario Bros. previously had the record back in April when an unopened copy of the game sold for $660,000 at auction. The Times notes that collectibles demand has gone through the roof during the pandemic whether for NFTs, classic cards or sports cards, all of which have risen dramatically in value. Video games remains a fairly new market for collectibles, but obviously it is rising fast.
After the $660,000 record for Super Mario, a Legend of Zelda cartridge sold in Japan for $870,000 in late July. That was broken days later by the Super Mario 64 purchase.
