Gilbert Melendez, who came into the UFC as a high-profile part of the lightweight division in 2013, has been released from the company. FightBook MMA reports that Melendez has been cut from the company following his fifth straight loss, which came against Arnold Allen at UFC 239 in July.

Melendez came into the UFC after Zuffa folded Strikeforce in 2013. As the Strikeforce lightweight champion, he earned an immediate shot at then-champion Benson Henderson. Melendez was unsuccessful in that fight and wound return with a win over Diego Sanchez at UFC 166 in October 2013. That would prove to be his only win in the company, as he went on a five-fight losing streak before being cut. Melendez thus ends his UFC run with a 1 – 6 record with the company.

Melendez teased a possible retirement after his loss to Allen; it isn’t clear if he will hang up the gloves at this point or continue outside the UFC.
