A Nightmare On Elm Street, Return Of the Jedi & More Added to National Film Registry
Freddy Krueger and Jabba the Hutt are going into the National Film Registry, which announced its new additions for 2021. The New York Times reports that the Library of Congress has announced the 25 films that will be selected for preservation this year, which include A Nightmare On Elm Street, Return Of the Jedi, WALL-E, Selena, and more.
The National Film Registry preserves up to 25 films each year that have are “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” and showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage. With these additions, there are now 825 films in the registry. Movies must be at least 10 years old to be eligible and are chosen by Librarian of Conrgess Carla Hayden, with consultation from members of the National Film Preservation Board and other specialists.
In addition to the above films, the selection includes the first of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies in The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as Martin Ritt’s 1972 drama Sounder and John Waters’ underground cult comedy Pink Flamingos starring the late Divine. Robert Aldrich’s 1962 Hagsploitation thriller What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford was also selected.
