It’s time for a different Batman, an Absolute Batman. As reported by Deadline, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation announced a new animated series for the breakout comic book series, Absolute Batman, that’s currently in the works. The studios will be partnering with the comic’s co-creator, Scott Snyder, on the upcoming project.

The series was announced, along with a whole group of new animated DC projects, during a joint presentation, hosted by Warner Bros. Animation President Sam Register, at the Annecy International Film Festival on Thursday (June 25). DC Studios Co-Chairman and Co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn were also in attendance, joining Safran onstage.

Other projects that were announced during the presentation were another new adult animated series, Joker: Laugh Riot, and an untitled kid-oriented project starring Krypto the Superdog that’s also in development.

Snyder is serving as executive producer and showrunner of the animated adaptation of his bestselling comic. Co-creator and artist Nick Dragotta is producing the project.

The popular reimagining of the Dark Knight depicts an alternate-universe version of Bruce Wayne/Batman set in DC’s Absolute Universe. In this iteration, Bruce Wayne is not a billionaire, and his mother, Martha Wayne, is still alive. However, he still eventually dons the mantle of Batman, taking on the powerful and corrupt criminals who are threatening Gotham City.

Launching in 2024, the comic was a huge seller, selling more than six million copies to date. The first volume is currently on its 11th print run.

Speaking on the series, Register commented, “We could not be more excited about this. We are in very early stages of development on this with executive producer and writer Scott Snyder and the artist Nick Dragotta.” He also said the new series would be CG-animated, adding, “It is a full CG show… It’s going to be a whole different tone and a whole different take again on Batman as well.”

Snyder also released a statement on the Absolute Batman animated series via social media (see below), writing, “ABSOLUTE BATMAN is going to be an animated series! Nick and I can’t thank @WB_Animation and @DCOfficial enough for making this happen.”

Absolute Batman Joins Warner Bros. and DC’s Growing Slate of Animated Projects

Meanwhile, Joker: Laugh Riot will be DC Studios’ first anime series. The project is being executive produced by Jim Krieg and directed by Yasuhuro Aoki. The unique storyline will explore The Joker undergoing an existential crisis after Batman is killed.

Per the show’s logline: “When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary. But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn’t know who he is.”

There are no details yet on where Absolute Batman will air or when it’s expected to be released. Warner Bros. Animation’s My Adventures With Superman is currently in its third season, which recently debuted on Adult Swim.

Season 2 of another animated Batman series, Batman: Caped Crusader, created and executive-produced by Bruce Timm, will premiere on July 31 on Prime Video. Also previewed at Annecy was Part 1 of the animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy. The three-part animated trilogy will be available later on home video, with Part 1 coming soon.
