The cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot is growing, per The Hollywood Reporter. Joining the team’s ranks is Asa Germann as the mutant hero Angel, aka Warren Worthington III.
Germann, who stars in Prime Video’s Gen V and recently appeared in Scream 7, is said to be in “final talks” for the role of Angel. The actor reportedly auditioned for the role of Cyclops beforehand, which went to actor Kit Connor. It’s said that while the actor wasn’t picked for Cyclops, he impressed Marvel Studios enough that he was offered the role of Angel.
Asa Germann joins the cast opposite Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
Angel Has a Long Storied History Across the X-Men Saga
Angel/Worthington has been a mainstay character in the X-Men comics going back to 1963, when the comic first began, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Angel was part of the original team lineup, which included Cyclops, Jean Grey/Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast, and Angel.
During a crucial point in his history, Angel’s wings were mangled and removed during the “Mutant Massacre” storyline. He was later brainwashed and seduced to the dark side by the tyrannical Apocalypse, becoming Archangel. However, the X-Men broke him free from Apocalypse’s influence, causing him to rejoin their side.
Angel has gone through many changes and transitions over the years. During the mid-1990s, Angel’s wings mysteriously grew back. In later years, his skin, which had been dyed blue by Apocalypse, reverted to its normal pigmentation during a fight with Black Tom. However, he’d lose his wings yet again and endure another transformation back into Archangel yet again.
Angel has also gone through a whirlwind romance, usually being paired with the mutant and fellow teammate Psylocke, with an on-again/off-again relationship. Early in his history, Angel was also in love with Jean Grey, but she loved Cyclops instead.
Multiple actors have portrayed Worthington/Angel across film, television, and games over the years. Ben Foster portrayed the character in X-Men 3 in 2006. Ben Hardy later played Angel/Archangel in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
He also appeared in X-Men: The Animated Series, with the show adapting his transformation from Warren Worthington III into Archangel by Apocalypse, voiced by Stephen Ouimette. The character returned in X-Men: 97 Season 2, this time voiced by Christopher Barger. Other animated appearances include X-Men: Evolution, voiced by Mark Hildreth, and Wolverine and the X-Men, voiced by Liam O’Brien.
The currently untitled X-Men movie is slated for release on May 5, 2028.
