It looks like Chris Evans will be back in the fold as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios and Disney finally released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming MCU feature earlier today, revealing that Evans is back as Cap.
The reveal is a big surprise, considering Evans seemingly concluded his arc as Steve Rogers in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. After the Avengers defeated Thanos, Steve traveled back in time to return the Infinity Stones. However, he opted to stay in the past to reunite with the woman he loves, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and start a life with her.
Years later, but only moments in the film, an elderly Steve appeared in the present, passing on his shield and mantle as Captain America to his friend and colleague, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), aka Falcon. Sam would eventually don the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and later starred in his first solo outing in Captain America: Brave New World earlier this year.
However, now it looks like Marvel Studios will utilize the Multiverse Saga shenanigans to bring Rogers back into the action. The new teaser depicts Steve returning to his quaint home, riding a motorcycle with a helmet featuring some appropriate red, white, and blue colors.
Also, the new teaser reveals that Steve is now a father to an infant child with his wife, Peggy. The teaser then ends with the subtitle that reads, “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
What Steve Rogers’ joining the story means in the case of the Avengers’ leadership, along with Sam Wilson’s role as Captain America, remains to be seen. It was previously indicated that Sam would be leading the Avengers as Captain America in the upcoming sequels.
The teaser confirms long-circulating rumors that Evans would be returning to the MCU in his iconic role. Evans previously denied he’d return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, although he did make an MCU return last year, reprising his role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch from the 20th Century Fox version of Fantastic Four in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo also wrote about the teaser reveal on Instagram, “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…”
Another teaser was released and attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash over the weekend, showcasing the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor in the upcoming sequel as well.
Avengers: Doomsday also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The film hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
