While news of Showtime’s Dexter revival has been divisive among fans, they’re at least giving us a hell of a cast member to portray its primary villain in Clancy Brown. TV Line reports that Brown, known for his well-received work in Carnivale, The Shawshank Redemption, and Superman: The Animated Series, will be playing Kurt Caldwell, the main antagonist of the series’ return.

The site reports that the character is the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. The official character description says that Kurt “realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone — he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”

Details on Iron Lake are not yet known. It could be the Oregon town that Dexter was living in as of the last moments of the original series finale or something else entirely. The show will pick up in current times, seven years after the series finale.

Michael C. Hall, who is reprising his role as the titular serial killer, has always understood fans’ negative reaction to the 2013 series finale. He recently told the Daily Beast that it’s a reason he decided to come back.

“It’s a conversation that’s been ongoing, and different possibilities have emerged over the years,” Hall said. “I think in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before. And let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’ So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on.”

Brown can currently be seen on film via a supporting role in the critical darling Promising Young Woman. He has also recently appeared in season one of The Mandalorian and the horror film The Mortuary Collection.
