Daredevil Casts Joanne Whalley as Matt Murdock’s Mother

Joanne Whalley has joined the cast of Marvel’s Daredevil to play Matt Murdock’s mother. Marvel has announced that Joanne Whalley (The Borgias, Wolf Hall) has been cast as Sister Maggie, who is Matt Murdock’s mother and was referenced at the ending of The Defenders as Matt lay in a bed dealing with the wounds he suffered in that show’s season finale.

The announced described Maggie as “a strong-willed nun who speaks her mind and cares deeply about Matt’s safety.” Whalley joins Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) in the new season. Erik Oleson is serving as showrunner in the new season.

“We are big fans of Joanne’s work and are fortunate that someone of her caliber will be joining our already talented family,” said executive producer Jeph Loeb.

Oleson added, “Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator. Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves.”
