The classic fantasy comic book ElfQuest is headed to the small screen, with Fox developing an animated series based on the title. Deadline reports that the network has given a script commitment to the one-hour animated drama, which will be based on the comic series from Wendy and Richard Pini.

ElfQuest debuted in 1978 under Pinis’ own Warp Graphics before moving to Marvel Comics in 1985. It then went back to Warp Graphics before moving to DC in 2003, then finally found its current home at Dark Horse Comics. The series is set on an Earth-like planet called World of Two Moons (eventually renamed to Abode) and follows a society of elves who work to co-exist with other species and each other.

Bento Box Entertainment and Modern Magic are behind the project with Susan Hurwitz Arneson (The Last Amazon) will set to write, showrun and executive produce. Rodney Rothman and Adam Rosenberg will also executive produce for Modern Magic alongside Arneson and Wendy and Richard Pini.

“ElfQuest couldn’t be in better hands,” said Wendy and Richard Pini in a statement. “Our collaborators trust the story. We have the highest regard for their previous achievements, and they have our blessing and input. We know their adaptation of ElfQuest will be a dream come true.”

“Wendy and Richard created and sustained one of the most successful independent comics of all time, added Modern Magic’s Rothman. “It’s vividly influenced many of our favorite movies and creators. Along with Susan Arneson, we see their achievement as a perfect jumping off point to explore how post-Spider-Verse animation can take the fantasy genre someplace we haven’t seen before. If you’re an artist who this speaks to, let us know. We’re looking for you.”
