Friends Cast in Talks For Unscripted Reunion Special on HBO Max

November 12, 2019 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

The cast of Friends are circling a reunion special that would air on HBO Max. THR reports that Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc are in talks along with creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane for the unscripted special.

The report makes it very clear that this is not a scripted revival series — which the cast and creators have always been adamantly against — and that there are still a lot of hurdles to be overcome. The deals are not close to completion yet and scheduling would also be a concern. That said, sources note that the six leads being willing to take part is “an accomplishment in and of itself.”

The special would be a big boon for HBO Max, which needs to find as many high-profile projects as it can to be competitive in the streaming wars. The service is launching in May of 2020 with a $15 a month price point. It will be the exclusive streaming home for Friends at a cost of $85 million a year for five years.
