Hamilton to Premiere on Disney+ in July
The Broadway sensation Hamilton is skipping its theatrical plans and making its way to Disney+ in July. Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that the filmed version of his iconic musical will release on July 3rd on the platform, just in time for Independence Day.
Disney bought the film rights for the musical in February for $75 million, and it was planned for a theatrical release on October 15th, 2021. However, the film was moved after the Michael Jordan docuseries The Last Dance became a huge hit for ESPN following Disney’s decision to bump it to an earlier date.
Hamilton is a huge success on stage, to say the least, with a total Broadway gross of over $363 million. The movie comes from the filming of three live performances and setup shots without an audience, which allowed director Tommy Kail to create multiple angles and give the production a cinematic feel. The film will feature the original Broadway cast in the roles.
It’s only a matter of time…
