HBO is bringing the Cenobites to the small screen, developing a Hellraiser series. Deadline reports that David Gordon Green (Halloween) will direct the pilot and several more episodes.

The series will be written by Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Daredevil), and Michael Dougherty (X-Men United, Trick r’ Treat) and will bring the venerable horror franchise to the small screen for the first time. The deal for the series is based on the Hellraiser film franchise with a plan to “create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology,” per the site.

Pinhead is expected to appear in the series, which will assume the previous mythology of the franchise to be a given.

Hellraiser is one of the most iconic horror film franchise of the 1980s, adapted from Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart. It revolves around the Lament Configuration, the famous puzzle box that when solved opens a gate to hell and summons the Cenobites to torment and punish the wicked.

The franchise has fallen into hard times over the past several years, with the most recent entries being unpopular with the majority of the even most ardent Hellraiser fans. Spyglass Entertainment is developing a new film in the series that is unrelated to the TV show.
