Jason Momoa has cancelled an appearance at Wizard World as he continues to protest the construction at a sacred Hawaiian mountain site. Wizard World announced via press release on Tuesday morning that Momoa will no longer be able to attend his scheduled event appearance at Wizard World Chicago, which takes place from August 22nd through the 25th. The cancellation cited “unforeseen personal circumstances.”

Momoa has been busy as of late putting his personal spotlight on the indigenous Hawaiian protests of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea is a sacred site to the Hawaiian people, many of whom (including Momoa) have been taking peaceful action against the $1.4 billion project. Mamoa has posted to his Instagram livestreaming and sharing photos from the protests. He has even suggested that Aquaman 2 production may have to wait, though that seems less likely as thew film doesn’t start production until next year. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has also been showing his support for the protests on social media.

You can see pics from Mamoa below from the protests. It is important to note that there is no confirmation that Momoa’s protests are the reason for the Wizard World cancellation, and it is possible that some other circumstance has come up.

Wizard World Chicago has announced that Jeff Goldblum, Zachary Levi (Shazam), and Steve Guttenberg are being added to the convention along with Charmed stars Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause, Richard Greico (21 Jump Street), Amy Acker and Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ken Page (The Nightmare Before Christmas) and Mark Sheppard (Firefly, Supernatural). They join the previously-announced Ben McKenzie, Morena Baccarin and Drew Powell (Gotham); Cary Elwes, Henry Winkler, Chris Sarandon (The Princess Bride), Daniel Cudmore (X-Men), George Wendt (Cheers), Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina, the Teenage Witch), Katrina Law (Arrow), David Giuntoli (Grimm) and more.

Pls support kīa’i for the @protectmaunakea movement. During this time, we are trying to unite both kānaka and Hawai’i born peoples alike to protect not only the mauna, but also our way of life and greatest natural resources in Hawaii as a whole. We feel that our movement has successfully united all aspects of Hawaiian culture with the exception of our traditional ocean practices – namely surfing, fishing, paddling, etc. This is where you come in. Pls be an inspiration and raise awareness amongst the general public and the corporate realm to promote the conservation of our ‘āina for our generation and future generations to come.
