Jerry Bruckheimer, who counts Pirates of the Caribbean among his many production successes, isn’t sure if Johnny Depp will be back for the next entry. The blockbuster producer spoke with Collider for a new interview and was asked about Depp’s possible return as Jack Saprrow, which he expressed some uncertainty about.

“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be,” Bruckheimer said. “So, we’re going to have to see.”

Disney has been reportedly developing a reboot that would, per reports, possibly Karen Gillan step into a new lead role. Depp is the sole character who has appeared in every entry of the franchise to date, though that also means that as the franchise has declined, Depp’s acclaim for the role has as well. It sounds like if he does return, it will be in a smaller role that previous entries.

Bruckheimer said of the next film, “We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”
