Joe Taslim Is Signed For Four Mortal Kombat Sequels
Warning: Spoilers follow for 2021’s Mortal Kombat.
If the Mortal Kombat franchise does continue, we’re likely to see a lot more of Joe Taslim’s Sub-Zero. Taslim, who played the iconic ninja in the newly-released film, told Variety in a new interview that he signed a deal committing to four more potential films.
In the film, Sub-Zero appears both in the centuries-earlier opening scene in which he murders Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and his family as well as in the present, when he is a henchman of Shang Tsung. Sub-Zero is killed by Cole Young (Lewis Tan) and Scorpion in the end of the movie, but his body is reclaimed by Shang Tsung with the clear implication that he’ll return.
The idea of a sequel seems very probable at this point, as the film opened well above expectations considering the pandemic and day-and-date HBO Max release with $23.3 million domestically. Its worldwide gross stands at $51.1 million, close to the $55 million production budget. While it still has a ways to go to make profit in theaters, it also reportedly stands as HBO Max’s most-watched premiere with 3.8 million household views according to Samba TV.
