Kevin Smith Shares Original Story Details for Zack Snyder’s Scrapped Justice League Trilogy
During a recent edition of his Fatman Beyond podcast (via SyFy.com), Kevin Smith discussed details of the now-scrapped Justice League trilogy that was originally planned for the DC film universe before those plans went to hell after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which received terrible reviews and under-performed at the box office. Smith revealed information about the original planned ending for the first Justice League movie and the rest of the planned trilogy after his recent set visit to Star Wars: Episode IX in the UK.
According to Smith, he spoke with people onset who worked both versions of the theatrical Justice League film, including Snyder’s original cut and the final theatrical version. These crew members had access to various pre-production material in the planning stages for the franchise. Smith said, “They saw Jim Lee breakdown boards for all three Justice League movies.”
It appears that the climax for the film would’ve remained quite similar. However, it would’ve ended differently with the Justice League seeing Darkseid after Steppenwolf is taken out of the Boom Tube. The idea is that Darkseid would’ve been Steppnwolf’s boss, and Steppenwolf is being taken back to his home planet of Apokolips.
Smith stated, “[The League] saw Darkseid, and Darkseid saw them. Boom tube closes, and that’s the end of the f***ing movie. With them all knowing there’s something out there, and we have to go.”
Smith also stated the scene featured in trailers where Alfred is speaking to a person offscreen is not actually Superman but an appearance for Green Lantern. The second Justice League movie would’ve had the team apparently going to Apokolips to face Darkseid. Smith continued, “Justice League 2 was going cosmic as they take the fight to Apokolips … and the Lantern Corps was involved.”
Unfortunately, the second movie would’ve ended badly for the heroes, similar to Empire Strikes Back or Avengers: Infinity War. Darkseid would’ve then taken over Earth, making it similar to the vision of the “Knightmare” sequence in Dawn of Justice.
For the third movie, the basis was the Justice League taking a final stand against Darkseid. Smith stated, “That was going to be the entire third movie. The heroes’ last stand against Darkseid and the forces of Apokolips — holy f**k!”
