Ryan Reynolds Says Disney Wants a Sequel to Free Guy
In light of both its critical and early box office success, it appears Walt Disney Studios is now keen on turning the 20th Century Fox release, Free Guy, into a franchise. Star Ryan Reynolds shared on his Twitter today that Disney confirmed that the studio “officially” wants a follow-up.
Reynolds noted the irony after he attempted to pitch the project to Disney as an original IP for three years. He wrote, “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony” He later added, “If it isn’t called Albuquerque Boiled Turkey we’ve failed.”
The film had an opening weekend of approximately $28.4 million at the domestic box office, and that’s during a currently ongoing global pandemic. It had a reported production cost between $100-$125 million. Also, the film did perform above initial box office projections.
Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Zak Penn and Matt Lieberman. It also stars Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, and Lil Rel Howery. Ryan Reynolds also produced the project.
