The death of Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame was polarizing among some MCU fans, but Scarlett Johansson appreciated it and has explained why in a new interview. Johansson spoke with ET on the set of the upcoming Black Widow and in the video, which you can see below, she explained why she saw Natasha’s death as making sense to her character.

“It’s funny because I’ve had kind of a lot of mixed reactions to her ultimate fate in Endgame,” Johansson said. “But for me, it made so much sense that she would sacrifice herself not just for the greater good of humanity, but actually for her friends, which was really at the heart of it. She’s a good one.”

In Endgame, Natasha and Clint Barton go to hunt down the Soul Stone and learn the same thing Thanos did: a sacrifice must be made. They fight each other to be the one to make the sacrifice, with Natasha “winning” and giving her life. We’ll see what happened to Natasha during the days between Captain America: Civil War and The Avengers: Infinity War in Black Widow, which releases on July 9th in theaters and on Disney+ through Premier Access.
