Showrunner Teases That Buffy The Vampire Slayer Revival Won’t Be a Reboot
The showrunner for the planned Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival has floated the possibility that the show will not be a full reboot. Monica Owusu-Breen posted to Twitter to address the news from over the weekend that she will be writing the reboot of the fan-favorite Joss Whedon series for Fox Television. The report prompted concerns from fans that the series will attempt to recast the titular role, which Sarah Michelle Gellar played in the seven-season series (and occasionally on its spin-off, Angel).
Owusu-Breen said in the post, which you can see below, that the characters from the original series “can’t be replaced” and she “wouldn’t try to.” She noted that the series inspired her before she was a writer and said that “maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer…”
The series will reportedly be seeking a black actress to play the lead role, with Whedon helping develop the property and serving as executive producer.
