Sony Head Calls Uncharted A ‘New Hit Movie Franchise’ After Opening Weekend
The head of Sony Pictures is referring to Uncharted as a “franchise” following the film’s successful opening weekend. As previously reported, the video game adaptation massively overperformed with a projected $51 million domestic take through Monday and $139 million worldwide.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman sent a companywide email on Monday celebrating the film’s successful launch. He referred to the film as “a new hit movie franchise for the company” while extolling the film’s positive audience score and the studio’s ability to launch films theatrically like Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
An Uncharted sequel has yet to be officially announced, but it is safe to say that the studio is considering options for the future of the series, which stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
