Do a barrel roll! Universal Pictures and Illumination just dropped a major reveal for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A new poster image confirms that Nintendo icon Fox McCloud of the Star Fox franchise officially joins the party in the upcoming movie release. You can check out the newly revealed poster below.
The poster shows the heroic Fox McCloud standing in front of his iconic Arwing fighter. The announcement reads, “Let’s rock and roll! Fox McCloud joins The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, only in theaters April 1. Get tickets now.” Of course, fans will know that Star Fox is the name of his team, not the furry pilot.
This will mark Fox’s big-screen debut. The Super Mario Bros. Movie referenced the Star Fox series with an Arwing model in Mario’s room. However, none of the famous pilots of the Star Fox team made a formal appearance.
The Star Fox and Super Mario Bros. franchises have crossed over before, most notably in the Super Smash Bros. fighting game series, which has featured the characters of Star Fox, including Falco Lombardi and Fox McCloud, crossing over with the stars of the Super Marios Bros. series and other iconic Nintendo franchises, including some other special guest video gam characters, like Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Ken and Ryu from Street Fighter, Cloud from Final Fantasy, and Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
Considering this movie will have an intergalactic theme, and the last movie introduced how the pipes act as gateways between other worlds and galaxies, that might explain how Fox McCloud of the Star Fox Universe will appear.
Who Is Voicing Star Fox’s Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Also notable, a voice actor reveal for Fox did not accompany today’s announcement. Universal recently confirmed that Donald Glover will be voicing Yoshi in the upcoming sequel.
The rest of the cast features the returning Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. New cast members include Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzmán as Wart, and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.
The upcoming sequel is once again directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a script by Matthew Fogel. It’s produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto.
The first movie in the franchise grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and it will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures in theaters on April 1.
