The Galaxy awaits Mario and his friends in a new animated adventure. Universal Pictures and Illumination revealed the official trailer today for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to 2023’s breakout animated hit feature, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, based on the iconic and beloved Nintendo video game series.
The new animated sequel is based on Nintendo’s world of Super Mario Bros. and continues events from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. The trailer reveals new additions to the cast, including Benny Safdie, voicing Bowser Jr., and also Princess Rosalina, voiced by Oscar-winner Brie Larson.
The trailer showcases the miniaturized Bowser still imprisoned by the Mushroom Kingdom. However, it looks like his son, Bowser Jr., arrives on the scene to bust him out. It looks like Mario and his friends will also be exploring new worlds and galaxies across the cosmos.
Notably absent is the beloved Yoshi, whose egg made a brief appearance in a post-credit scene in the first movie, appearing to hatch before his trademark “Yoshi!” catchphrase is heard offscreen. Other returning cast members for the sequel include Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
The upcoming feature is produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to direct the sequel, with a script by returning writer Matthew Fogel. Brian Tyler is also back to compose the score.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and released worldwide by Universal Pictures in theaters on April 3, 2026.
