The third film in The Conjuring franchise has a name, and it plays into the new entry’s court roots. New Line Cinema has announced that the third entry in the main franchise will be titled The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The film sees the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, alongside Ruairi O’Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Julian Hilliard.

The Michael Chaves-directed film is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who was put on trial in 1981 for the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono. Johnson said that he was possessed, the first time the “Devil Made Me Do It” defense was used. The trial attracted media attention worldwide.

The synopsis for the film, which releases on September 11th, 2020, reads:

The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.
