Dave Meltzer Critiques Finish for Dragon Lee vs. Ethan Page Match on WWE Raw

On this week’s WWE Raw, Dragon Lee defeated Ethan Page, earning a future shot at the WWE Intercontinental Title currently held by Chad Gable. Gable himself got involved in the match when Page tried to cheat his way to victory, allowing Lee to pick up the victory.

During yesterday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer commented on the Ethan Page vs. Dragon Lee match from last Monday. Meltzer took issue with how much effort WWE put into protecting Page in defeat against Dragon Lee.

He commented on the No. 1 Contenders match (via WrestlingInc.com), “Sometimes they overdo it on protecting the loser, and in this situation, this was one of those times. That finish, he should’ve won a lot better than that for that finish.”

However, Meltzer did go on to say that the money matchup for Chad Gable right now is an eventual title bout with Page, admitting that WWE was ultimately right to “protect” Page in his loss. He continued, “I mean, it was obvious that finish was there to protect Ethan Page because they think that Ethan Page, and they’re not wrong, that Ethan Page is actually the money match for Chad Gable and they’re obviously holding it off … based on that, yeah they had to protect him.”

For now, it will be Dragon Lee vs. Chad Gable for the WWE Intercontinental Title. That match is scheduled for September 14 at WWE Raw in Mexico City.
