JBL Gives Advice To Released WWE Talent After Becoming Free Agents

On the latest episode of Something To Wrestle With, JBL was asked what he would do if he found himself among the batch of released WWE talent whose non-compete windows have now expired. His advice was to resist the pull of another guaranteed contract. The talent who were released in late April, such as Dexter Lumis/Samuel Shaw, are becoming free agents over the last week. On Dexter Lumis:

“I’ve got a hat up here from Dexter Lumis. He chopped it in half with an axe or something. I worked Dexter some when I was doing something with Baron Corbin, I think it was. I like Dexter. Dexter is a good guy. All these people are good guys. Zelina’s a good friend. I like all these guys.”

On His Advice:

“I’ll tell you what I would do: I would not try to get, you know — some guys want to be underneath the tent and be protected and be adopted, essentially. And you’ll find out pretty quick which one of these are like that. They want to have a contract. Some guys are like, ‘You know what, screw you. I’m going to make a name for myself and you’re going to pay me to go somewhere.’ And that’s what I would do, at least would try to do.”

On Going To Various Places:

“I think they should go out and start working as many different places as they can. Go to Japan. Go to Mexico. Go to Europe. Work all these independents. Try to create a name for yourself. Create something different. Some new iteration of you, whatever that is. Go out there and draw some money, create a name for yourself, and then all of a sudden there’s demand for you.

“Everybody uses Cody Rhodes as the example, but that’s obviously a terrific example. So was Brock. You leave and turn down guaranteed money. Now, these guys may have been cut — I think they were cut, they didn’t leave by their own volition — but the same thing works. Don’t try to go right away somewhere else. Create a name for yourself, and then you can start putting out feelers to see where you want to go.”
