Well everyone it’s time for the go home episode of WWE Smackdown. This event was taped earlier today in Paris so I’m sure you can find spoilers if you’d like. This is the last chance the WWE has to get you to watch Clash in Paris on Sunday, which I’ll be covering, and with the French crowd we should get a decent episode overall. Last week Randy Orton RKO’d Drew McIntyre so expect more from those two while Cody is off filming a movie, Damian Priest and Aleister Black are still going at it as well. Tiffany Stratton still doesn’t have a clear cut rival or direction for the women’s title, so that needs to get sorted out soon. Also we’ve got more between Logan Paul and John Cena, so get ready for some more drawn out promo segments featuring those two. Our main event will be for the US title, Solo Sikoa has been dragging that thing down and around but now Sami Zayn challenges for it. The Street Profits also take on Carmelo Hayes and Miz for a shot at the Wyatt Sicks tag team gold, the Secret Hervice get a women’s tag team title shot against Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, and Michin takes on Kiana James with a chance to challenge Giulia for the women’s US title on the line. The tag team match should be fine and Sami vs. Solo is unlikely to suck so there’s that to look forward to. That’s the preamble so let’s get to the action.
Michael Cole welcomes us to Lyon, France and we get the usual crowd shots. We also see various wrestlers arrive, Solo with his municipal fairgrounds tax, as well as Sami Zayn and Drew McIntyre arriving separately.
A recap of last weeks Smackdown, specifically the Logan Paul and John Cena stuff.
That leads into the arrival of Logan Paul who gets showered with boos. Logan gets a mic and objects to being called a parasite, the audio from the crowd is a little odd as they’re clearly messing with the levels. Logan says he’s a disruptor rather than a parasite. After he came here WWE got to Netflix, then to ESPN and he brings incredible value to this company. You’re welcome TKO. They badly dub over an obvious “shut the fuck up” chant. The WWE is becoming the WWMe, he’s the future whether we like it or not. And John Cena represents the old guard. I get that they struggled to cover up the STFU chants but this just feels off, I feel like there were better options than this because what they wound up doing just removed all the energy from this. Logan with some French for the locals and says he’ll show us that he’s the future and is the change in wrestling. That brings out John Cena, the crowd sing him down to the ring and he gets his special introduction. After that’s done Cena gets a mic and says Logan is stupid. You can’t do it alone, if we don’t have the fans there isn’t a show. They’re not getting left behind, they set the pace and hold the keys to if anyone has a long career here. He sees the potential in Logan, we all want to root for him as Logan keeps talking about elevating this but everyone knows Logan wont put a single ounce of effort into understanding what actually goes on here. If Logan did homework he’d know he wasn’t a disruptor, just a wannabe. Cena was one of the original disruptors, a man who changed titles and pissed off purists, then wrapped to WrestleMania. 20 years ago Cena knocked people out with brass knuckles and Logan is just copying him, a dollar store John Cena. He mocks Logan’s influence as it isn’t what it used to be, because Logan is not on anyone’s list of top influencers in the world. You used to make videos of pranks and stunts at 12, dropped a few diss tracks at 16, and now if Logan makes headlines it’s for the wrong reasons. Logan’s influence has shrunk and now he’s here to save himself. The people don’t fear change, they just see through fake. Cena with a little French now to a decent pop. He calls Logan just a gimmick, and everyone sees through him and are disgusted with him because Logan gets opportunity after opportunity but gives nothing in return. Cena is happy to show Logan what respect looks like, he exits the ring and finds that one kid right there from Belgium who he mocked and apologizes to him. Logan asks when this turned into a charity case. Cena reminds Logan that Logan asked for this match and now he’s got it, the disappearer vs. the disappointment, the paragon vs. parasite, and he warns Logan that after Sunday if Logan can’t figure himself out he wont ruin wrestling, wrestling will ruin Logan. Decent stuff here, but again the way they had to mess with the crowd noise took a bit out of this.
In the back Cathy talks with the Street Profits and B-Fab, they just need to focus and get the win. Melo isn’t him and Miz all talk. They still want the smoke. Bo Dallas sans mask and hat wanders over, he points out that the Profits aren’t a real family. When they come for them and fail, then they’ll find if they really are each others brother. OK then.
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss head to the ring, but they’re jumped on the entrance ramp by Chelsea Green and Alba Fyre. Fyre goes after the leg of Charlotte and she’s left laying on the ramp as we head to break.
Match #1: Alexa Bliss vs. Chelsea Green w/ Alba Fyre
We come back as the bell rings for Bliss and Green. Bliss with a series of takedowns and strikes then Fyre distracts things so Green can try a sneak attack but Bliss counters and retains control. Green misses a stomp as they get back in the ring. Knee drop from Bliss but then she misses a senton. Green and Bliss trade some slaps then Green slams Bliss into a corner. Pump kick from Green but Bliss fights back with a head scissors takeover. Now Bliss with a cannonball senton from the apron onto Fyre but Green then rams Bliss into the ring steps and we go back to commercial break.
We come back to Green landing a dropkick. Green goes up top for missile dropkick and that sends Bliss out of the ring. Bliss is able to send Green into the barricade and both women are down. Both women beat the 10 count then start trading strikes from their knees. Eventually Bliss gets the better of that and starts to fire up with shoulder blocks and a flurry of strikes. Step over Blockbuster from Bliss gets a 2 count. Zig Zag from Green for a 2 count of her own. Green goes up top, Bliss yanks her down into a tree of woe and lands a basement dropkick. Now it’s Bliss who goes up top, Fyre runs over but gets kicked down though Green gets her knees up to block Twisted Bliss. Both women avoid finishers then Bliss with a school boy roll up for 3.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Alexa Bliss won in 9:26
Rating: 2.5 stars
Thoughts: The crowd elevated this a bit, but the commercial break hurt this and I’m not sure what inspired the bait and switch booking but I’m not exactly a fan of that.
Post match Fyre and Green attack Bliss, Charlotte hobbles her way back down and chops away at Green but Fyre cuts that off and Green his an Unpretty Her to Charlotte then Bliss takes a Gory Bomb from Fyre.
In the back Cath talks with Sami Zayn, Sami feels renewed on Smackdown and got into his own head on RAW lately. Now he feels like a WrestleMania main eventer, he’s totally confident and will get the title tonight in Lyon.
We get the announcement of Cody Rhodes daughter being born and that sends us to break. Congratulations to the family on that.
We come back to a Aleister Black vignette. He says it’s time to show Priest what hell looks like. The violence is going to escalate. He’s going to show everyone how misguided and hollow Priest is. When Priest is sitting at home, paralyzed, you’ll know it was Black who whispers to him “I warned you”.
Damian Priest responds with Cathy, Priest says Black is not like him. He doesn’t make empty threats, and Black is unprepared for this fight. He’s going to teach Black what it’s like to be like him and where he’s from. They’re going to learn about pain together, and Priest will enjoy every bit of violence he can inflict on Black.
Michin heads to the ring next and we head back to break. Did Cena and Logan really screw up the first hour pacing that badly?
Post break here comes Kiana James with Giulia. James does have her own entrance theme, so that’s nice.
Match #2: Michin vs. Kiana James w/ Giulia
Michin avoids a purse shot and rolls up James for the 3 count.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Michin won in :07
Rating: DUD
Thoughts: Well that was just an angle, not a real match.
Post match Giulia lays out Michin with an Arrivederci knee strike. On the floor Giulia then with a Curb Stomp into the ring steps to leave Michin laying.
In the back Drew McIntyre walks, he’ll have promo time after this break.
Commentary reminds us of Wrestlepalooza in September.
Drew McIntyre heads to the ring to a decent pop. He checks under the ring for Randy Orton before getting a mic and asking if anyone has seen Randy around here. He also mocks the lack of update on Cody Rhodes, then gets in the ring. Drew says he’s happy to fight Randy if that’s what he wants, but he does want to talk and asks Randy out here so the crowd can sing his song. That does get Randy to show up and the fans do of course sing along because who doesn’t love karaoke night. Once Randy gets in the ring Drew sarcastically asks if that was special. He says he’s got something to say to Randy and feels Randy will see things his way. If Randy attacked him last week for himself then fair, but if he attacked him because he thinks Cody is his friend that’s not fine. Cody is no one’s friend, he’s a liar, a manipulator, a politician. When Randy was gone for 2 years he knows Cody checked in all the time, but that wasn’t friendship it was intel to use against him. He brings up Cody winning King of the Ring attacking Randy’s back, which he knew about because Randy told him. At his point if Randy believes Cody is a friend he’s an idiot. Randy says Drew makes a decent point, he’ll think about it but he dropped Drew not because of Cody but because he thinks Drew is a prick. Headbutt from Drew, he lines up a Claymore but Randy avoids it then hits the draping DDT. Now Randy lines up the RKO but a bunch of security goons and officials run down to try and separate things. Randy, predictably, just drills the trainees with RKOs including one for Shane Helms. Now Randy lines up a Punt kick but Drew rolls away and staggers down the ramp behind the invisible barrier that keeps Randy in the ring.
In the back Miz and Carmelo Hayes warm up and talk, Hayes says Miz can’t keep stealing his pins but Miz says they’re winning and both men have helped each other win recently. As a team they share glory, they need to harness that energy but Bo Dallas wanders over. He says perceptions aren’t reality, and asks if they can handle reality. Well that didn’t go well. Hayes says they’ve got this.
To the ring and here come the Street Profits as we head to break.
Post break we find Randy talking with Nick Aldis in the back. Randy with the product placement as he gives Aldis some Fireball. R-Truth comes over to ask if he’s going to drink it, after the day he’s had he is going to.
Back to the ring and here come Miz and Hayes.
Match #3 – Tag Team Match: Street Profits (Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins) w/ B-Fab vs. Carmelo Hayes and Miz
26 minutes between matches. Miz and Ford start, Ford grabs a side headlock then does some gymnastics before landing a dropkick. Dawkins tags in and they hit a double Flapjack on Miz. Miz with a jawbreaker then Hayes with a blind tag but Dawkins runs them both over. Corner work for both men but Miz trips up Dawkins for Hayes to hit a fade away leg drop and send us picture in picture.
Back in the ring Hayes works to keep control of Dawkins. Miz tags in and Dawkins takes some tandem offense. Kicks from Miz then a boot to keep Dawkins down. Hayes tags in and hits a springboard clothesline for a 2 count. Miz and Hayes with fairly quick tags to keep Dawkins down and Ford out of the match. We come back to Dawkins fighting out of the heel corner but Hayes lands a thrust kick only for Dawkins to fight back with a right hand and a Big Ending to put both men down. Both men tag out and Ford gets to run wild on Miz for a bit. Clothesline from Ford then a back suplex and standing moonsault for a 2 count. Miz takes an enziguri but then lands a DDT. Ford avoids a Skull Crushing Finale, Hayes with a blind tag as Ford hits an Angle Slam. Ford From the Heavens to Miz but Hayes hits a Frog Splash on Ford for a 2 count. Hayes and Ford start trading strikes, then we get a mid air collision and both men are down. The Wyatt Sicks show up to just sit ringside and distract Miz as Dawkins tags in then blasts Miz off the apron. The Revelation to Hayes and the Profits win.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Street Profits won in 9:06
Rating: 3 stars
Thoughts: Good little match, it was paint by numbers but that’s not really a bad thing in this case. I’m a little surprised they didn’t have Miz and Hayes get that shot given Miz’s history with them and how losing the title shot would make for a good impetus for the inevitable Miz and Hayes separation.
Post match the Profits and Wyatts stare down but nothing comes of it.
In the back Tiffany Stratton and Jade Cargill talk, Jade is the new number one contender after she pinned Nia Jax last week. The two bicker and jaw at each other for a bit. OK then.
Solo Sikoa and company talk in the back, Solo says it’s over for Sami tonight. Well at least it was quick, the less time Solo talks the better.
Sami Zayn heads to the ring and we head to break.
Commentary run down the Clash in Paris card. It’s. . . well it’s a card.
Back to the ring and here comes Solo Sikoa with his goons.
Match #4 – US Title Match: (c) Solo Sikoa w/ Tonga Loa, Tala Tonga, and JC Mateo vs. Sami Zayn
Solo goes right to throwing strikes and headbutts but Sami misdirects him over the ropes then fakes a dive and we head to break.
We come back to Solo in control of things. Corner punches from Solo, lot of daylight on those, then Solo connects a hip attack. Sami fights back with some punches then he clotheslines Solo out of the ring. Now Sami sets to dive and hits one onto Solo. JC and Loa attack Sami behind the refs back to put Solo back in control. Spinning Solo for a 2 count. Jimmy Uso arrives to attack JC and Loa, then Jacob Fatu’s music hits and the Samoan Werewolf comes through the crowd. Fatu assaults Tala then helps Jimmy deal with the other two. In the ring Sami hits a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. All the add ons at ringside fight through the crowd and towards the back leaving Solo and Sami alone. Solo avoids a Helluva Kick by heading to the floor, Sami follows and eats a Spinning Solo onto the announce table and we go picture in picture.
Solo tries to take a count out but Sami beats the count. They head back to the floor and Solo with another few Uranage slams onto the table then he again tries for the count out win. Of course once again Sami barely beats the count. Some corner work from Solo then they fight on the top rope as we come back to broadcast. Headbutts from Solo but then he tries the avalanche Samoan Drop but Sami counters into a Sunset powerbomb for a near fall. Sami goes up top but misses his flying nothing then Solo with a Samoan Drop. Solo goes up top, Splash connects for a 2 count. Now Solo tries the Samoan Spike but Sami counters with a roll up for 2 then hits the Exploder suplex into the corner. Sami lines up a Helluva Kick but runs into a superkick from Solo. Sami avoids a Spike then hits a Helluva Kick, then for good measure he hits another one and pins to win.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Sami Zayn won the title in 13:25
Rating: 2.5 stars
Thoughts: The crowd carried a lot of this as Solo’s matches are pretty repetitive at this point. Sami gets a feel good moment and the US title still needs a little rehabilitation that he might be able to provide.
Sami celebrates with the title to end the episode.
