During a recent interview with Muscle Man Malcolm for The Sportster, AEW TBS Champion and CMLL World Women’s Champion Persephone discussed reigning AEW Women’s World Champion Mercedes Mone. Persephone is very familiar with the champion, as she’s faced her twice. Persephone also defeated Mercedes Mone to win the CMLL Women’s World Title earlier this year. Below are some highlights:

Persephone on Mercedes Mone

“I think we can’t shy past everything she’s done, the history she’s made, right? The career she’s built. It’s obviously an impressive one. But for you, she now finally circled back around and finally won the title that she couldn’t win over and over and over again. What a loser. But she finally won it. Good for her. Real proud of her. Right now, in this moment, I’ve got a lot of people heckling me. I’ve got beef with a bunch of different people. Mind you, they didn’t ask for it. They just keep bothering me.

“So, I think I need to put a little nail in each coffin before I can circle back around to what really bothers me, you know, to what I really want, because I’ve beaten her once. We have each other’s number right now. I’ve beaten her once. I can get her again. No biggie. But we’re going to wait because again, all these little girls are just bugging me. Which is why we had to call in the doctor because it was just getting to be too much.”

On How Eddie Guerrero Inspired Her Career

“As you all obviously know, I’m just an extremely humble person, and so I can admit I know I shouldn’t even get an award for how humble I am, but I can admit that I am just I’m not on Eddie’s level yet. You know what I mean? Like I’m just a legend like that. I don’t know that anyone is, but to start building a name and climbing up there to the point where El Paso itself is recognizing someone that is, like, you know, following in those footsteps, and it’s kind of building a career after he built something so great is honestly freaking cool because after Eddie, obviously El Paso hadn’t had a pro wrestler that really put El Paso on the map, right? Eddie was just that guy.

“He was that guy because he followed similar steps that I’m not going to lie, when I was little, I didn’t even know he followed, and that I ended up kind of mimicking without really trying to. But he came out here to Mexico, wrestled in Arena Mexico, built a name for himself out here in Mexico before he went to the US and made that full transition to just being a wrestler in the United States. And so his name was already important over here on this side. He made it important on that side. He put the borderland in general because, like myself, right, he was born in El Paso.

“But when you’re born on the border, you really go back and forth, and you’re representing the border town, which is both the city on one side and on the other. And so I think he did an extremely good job of representing both cities. And to know that I’d like to think I’m following a similar path of always putting those two cities, Juarez and El Paso, on the map and never really shying away from, yeah, I haven’t lived there in so many years, right? Because I’ve been out here, but those are still my home, and those are still the cities that I’m going to represent always.”

On Knowing She Has the Aura to Become the Next Big Superstar in Wrestling

“Because I know it. I’ve always known it. I think as a kid, but this is even outside of professional wrestling. I think I’ve just always known that I’m just that good. Um, and mind you, there were moments where, obviously, if I lost in Olympic wrestling, if I lost a tournament, or there were other sports I did, if it just wasn’t my day and I messed up, obviously, didn’t go home feeling so great. But at the end of the day, it never changed the fact that I just always felt like … But I even got scholarships, but for academia and not just sports. And so, like, there was always this part of me that knew, like, no matter what I decide to do, whatever path I take. I’m gonna do it, and I’m gonna be it. Like, you know, I’m gonna succeed. I’m gonna be great at it because I’m just that good. And I’ve always known that I work hard to be that great. So whatever it is I choose, I know I’m going to succeed.

“Like, I just and I think because I’m so humble. I think that is what makes someone work that, yeah, you can have aura, you can have it, that it factor that people just love, but if you yourself don’t actually believe it, if you yourself don’t know that, like you know you’re not telling yourself, ‘Oh yeah, I am that great. I am it.’ If you’re not believing it, I feel like people won’t believe it either, and then you’re done. That’s just it. Because I think in this business, we obviously have to convince everyone out there, millions of people that are watching us, whatever it is, we want to convince them. But you have to make it to where you believe it yourself so that they’ll believe it. Because if you don’t believe it, no one else will.”

It remains to be seen if Persephone and Mercedes Mone will have a rubber match, as they are currently 1-1 against each other. On last week’s AEW Dynamite: Rebel Heart show, Dr. Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida, and Persephone beat the team of Hyan, Maya World, and Thunder Rosa in a six-woman tag team bout.

Persephone is also set to defend her CMLL World Women’s Title in a huge Fatal 4-Way bout at the CMLL 93rd Anniversary Show on September 18. Persephone will defend her title against Mina Shirakawa, Tessa Blanchard, and Starlight Kid at the event.
