Story Of The Year guitarist Phil Sneed recently revealed how much the band was paid for the reworked version for Christian’s WWE theme. The band, best known for songs like “Until the Day I Die” and “Anthem of Our Dying Day,” recorded a new version of the then-WWE star’s “Just Close Your Eyes” theme in 2009. The track was originally recorded in 2004 by Waterproof Blonde.
Sneed appeared on The Rizzuto Show recently and during the conversation, he recalled how they ended up doing the song.
“When we did the WWE thing, the office called us and said, ‘There is a song, can you record it for a WWE guy?,’” Sneed said (per Fightful). “[We said] ‘Yeah, which one?’ At the time, we were touring and I didn’t know anything about WWE. ‘It’s a guy named Christian.’ We had never heard of him.”
He continued, “We recorded this thing, they gave us $1,000. ‘We’ll just do it at our buddies studio.’ We did it, passed it on, and all of a sudden are numbers are jumping everywhere. We had no idea. Wrestling fans are like, ‘This is one of the coolest entrance music ever. Christian is about to take the belt.’ ‘Oh my God, this guy is good?!?!?!’”
Christian went on to use the Story of the Year version until he left WWE in 2014. Christian is now of course in AEW, where he and Adam Copeland are just off a run as AEW World Tag Team Champions.
