Tommaso Ciampa has some big hopes for how he’d like to finish out his first year in AEW, though he doesn’t mind if it’s a slow burn. Ciampa made his AEW debut in late January, quickly winning the TNT Championship for a short reign. He’s had a number of high profile matches since then, including the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All In.

Ciampa spoke with The Battleground Podcast where he was asked about what would make his first year in the company a top year. You can see the highlights below:

On What Would Make His First Year In AEW A Banner Year:

“It’s turning into a bonafide main event player. It’s being showcased on the pay-per-views. It’s winning titles, it’s having good showings in the Owen Cup, the Continental Classic. It’s — you know, there’s an insane amount of depth on this roster, and there’s so many guys who are more than capable of main eventing any given night of the week. So, the competition is just very high. And anyone who follows pro wrestling just understands that you just spin that wheel, and you hope it lands on you. And it’s tough the depth is what it is in a company like AEW.

“So really just if I could check off say 10 out of 30 on that list, that would be a very successful year one. And that’s not even getting to the AEW World title yet. I’m a big proponent of a slow burn. And if that means I could capture each title and each accolade on the way to the top, that’s my preferred journey. I prefer that over the hot shot journey. So, that that would be it, man. You know, winning the National Title, winning the Continental. Going on and taking the Owen Cup. Like, there’s just so many cool things that you could do.

On AEW’s Upcoming Shows That He’s Excited For:

“And then now we’re doing these crazy awesome shows and venues. Obviously, Wembley was amazing; we got France coming up. We’re going back to England in February. We have a pay-per-view coming up just around the corner on my daughter’s birthday in Chicago. And Chicago’s always been such a great city to me. It’s literally where the Psycho Killer was born in AEW. We got Orlando coming up, which is where I currently live. So it feels like one thing just leads to the next. So just being a player and getting some big matches and showcase feuds would be a very productive year for me, because I feel like if the opportunity is there, there’s no doubt I’ll deliver. So, it’s just a matter of finding my way into the opportunity.”
