Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron Say AEW Women’s Tag Titles Are Coming Along at ‘Perfect Time’

Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron are competing in the AEW Women’s Tag Team Title Tournament, and they say the new titles are coming along at just the right time. The self-titled Babes of Wrath are part of the tournament to crown the first champions. They face Mercedes Mone in the first round.

Nightingale and Cameron spoke with Rick Ucchino for The Takedown on SI and spoke about the tournament and more. You can see highlights below:

On Their Reaction To the Titles Being Officially Instituted:

Nightingale: “A little disbelief. Because like you said, we’ve known that they’ve kind of like been around for a bit. But like actually being like, ‘Oh, it’s time to pull the lever, make it happen,’ was cool.””

Cameron: “Yeah, 100%. And I think we’re all just like — you know, everyone’s got a fire lit in them at the moment, too. Because it’s just opening the door to more opportunities. And I think that it’s a good reason to feel extremely motivated. Even though we all have that within us when we come to work every week, it’s definitely something that fuels that fire of like, ‘Let’s get it,’ you know?”

On the Titles Being Validating For the Women’s Division:

Nightingale: “Somebody had told me maybe a year, two years ago, something like that. That you know, giving us tag titles wouldn’t necessarily create more opportunity. It’s it has to be that we already kind of have a division that’s functioning and flourishing. That tag titles would be like a reward for something that’s already kind of in motion.

“And I would say maybe a year ago, two years ago, it would have just kind of been like, ‘Here you go, guys. Here’s some some gold for you to chase.’ But it wouldn’t really be presented, I think, in a meaningful way. Whereas I would say the better part of this past year, we’ve really focused on tags. We’ve done a lot of eight-woman tags, a lot of kind of finding alliances amongst one ourselves. So, the timing feels perfect.”

Cameron: “I totally agree. I think that it would have — I 100% think that historically, if it had been set out? It would have been to tick a box. Because I think realistically that us as a company have been growing and growing. And our women’s division has — right now it is just so strong, and it really has flourished. And we have so many genuine strong alliances that it’s not like, ‘Oh okay, we have to give you tag belts now.’

“It’s a — we have so many genuine connections. And we’ve had so many amazing matches, like multi-women matches this year where we saw teamwork. And we saw teams, and we saw synergy, and we saw a reason for it to make sense. So literally to reiterate what Willow said, just in Harley words? 100% agree, it feels like it’s coming at the perfect time.”
