There has long been a push to get a stunts category at the Oscars, and the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences says they’re finally exploring the possibility. AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer spoke with Empire Online and noted that they have begun looking at the possibility of adding a category for the long-neglected stunt category.

“We’re talking to members of the stunt community who are Academy members about the possibility of that,” Kramer said. “We added a new award that will launch in two years for Casting Directors, so we’re always open to those discussions.”

The notion of a stunts category has gained mainstream notice in recent years, and the Academy aired a video highlighting stunt work at this year’s ceremony. During the leadup to May’s release of The Fall Guy, that film’s cast and crew repeatedly spoke in support of adding such a category to the award ceremony.

“The Academy is like a living, breathing organism,” Academy President Janet Yang said. “We listen to our members, and if there’s really strong support and there’s whole mechanisms for how to advance the cause, and they’re interested… That’s what happened with Casting. We’ve created new branches over the decades. So it does evolve, and it evolves with the changing industry.

No word on when such a category couple potentially be instituted at this time.
