Chris Pratt is returning as cartoo-strip cat, Garfield, in a sequel to last year’s hit CG-animated feature, per The Hollywood Reporter. The 2024 animated The Gafrield Movie was a global hit at the box office, grossing $91 million domestically and $257 million worldwide.
The upcoming sequel, produced by Alcon Entertainment, will be produced by Alcon co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, along with John Cohen, Steven P. Wegner, and Pratt. Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios will co-produce the project along with Alcon Entertainment. DNEG Animation, which worked on the first film, is reportedly working on the sequel as an animation partner.
Before the first film’s release, Alcon acquired the rights of the character from creator Jim Davis, who is attached as an executive producer on the sequel. Bridget McMeel of Amuse will also serve as an executive producer for the animated feature.
Plans are currently under way for a writer and director. Pratt is no stranger to animation, having also voiced Mario in 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination Entertainment, Nintendo, and Universal Pictures. The planned sequel to the $1.3 billion smash hit is due out on April 3, 2026. Pratt also voiced Emmet in The LEGO Movie franchise.
Sony Pictures released the first Garfield animated feature starring Chris Pratt. The story followed how the famous cat was adopted by his owner, Jon Arbuckle (Nicholas Hoult), along with Garfield getting involved in a heist with his long-lost father, Vic (Samuel L. Jackson).
