Dave Meltzer Explains Why Ricky Saints Is Using the Tornado DDT as His New Finisher in WWE NXT

During last Saturday’s WWE NXT Halloween Havoc, NXT Champion Ricky Saints retained his title against former champion, Trick Williams, in the main event. Saints used the Tornado DDT to score the pinfall victory. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shed more light on why Ricky Saints has been opting to use the Tornado DDT as his finishing move in WWE NXT.
Previously, Saints (formerly Ricky Starks) had used both the Spear and the Roshambo as his finishing moves in AEW. According to Meltzer, WWE doesn’t want Saints to use the Roshambo as a finishing move because they don’t want him to perform the move on bigger wrestlers.
Additionally, multiple wrestlers across the industry using the Spear ruled it out as a finisher for Saints. Meltzer stated, “I know that the Roshambo, I think they don’t want him to try and do it on bigger guys, so, you know, and obviously, they don’t want him doing the Spear as his finish because too many guys are using it now.”
Meltzer also noted his opinion that the Tornado DDT isn’t a good pick for a finisher for Saints. He added, “I think as far as a pick for a finish, I don’t think this is a good one because every luchador uses that move, and it’s never the finish. So when you see it, you don’t think finish, and then it was, and then it’s like a flat finish.”
At WWE NXT No Mercy, Ricky Saints also utilized the Tornado DDT, which he’s dubbed the Coup D’état, to win the NXT Championship. He dethroned former champion Oba Femi to win the belt at the premium live event.
With his bitter rivalry with Trick Williams escalating, Saints will now go on to defend his title against Trick Williams in two weeks. The two men will face off in a Last Man Standing Match on the November 11 edition of NXT TV.
